We learnt how to make an animated Gif using Pivot and we all made our own. Here is a screen grab of Tianna's, she had two figures and a dog, and chose a shopping centre as her background. We will finish these next week so will share some with you.

I was overwhelmed with requests from year 5&6 last week, a record 39 number of children asked to join! I'm sorry if your name didn't get selected, but I do promise that we will have a change of children next term so everyone will get a chance to come.

We start ICT club on Wednesday 21st September at 3.30pm...our very first activity will combine ICT and DT, so if you have any of these, empty spare knocking around I really need you to bring them into school. The taller spindles are the ones I need.

Lego minifigs animation

This week Mrs Cooper brought in a selection of Lego and some mini figures and without much preparation at all (sometimes this can be refreshingly creative) we launched into making some stop frame animations. The boys quickly decided to go with a Star wars ship and made some stars and Earth stuck with blue tack to a piece of black sugar paper...they made a short but well animated clip of the ship landing on Earth! Impressive.

In ICT club this week, Mrs Cooper had two sealed envelopes labeled "Paris" and "London". Also two of our computer rooms had signs on the doors LONDON and the other PARIS.. there were only two in club as everyone else was on the trip to Kingswood. Cameron and Chloe chose an envelope and then went into two separate rooms.....

We logged into a pre booked flashmeeting (a neat video conferencing online facility) We could see the other person via a webcam (see below). We opened our envelopes and via the chat facility we had to guess the object in the other city's envelope. It was a bit like a game of 20 Questions, you had to ask something to find out what objects were for example, is it living/is it bigger than a cat. As Cameron was in Paris his answers had to be "Oui" or "Non" wheras Chloe was in London, so could only answer Yes or No! It was quite tricky, but fun...the objects were...

Wow, this just goes to show where a brilliant skill can take you... A Birmingham-based stop-motion studio have recently made an animated cut out animation for a Czech beer.
60 seconds of brilliance! The film is made by animating paper set in the Czech city of Pilsen where the world's first golden beer is made.

Fathers day and Powerpoint quizzes

This week Mrs Cooper showed us a really fun powerpoint game, we all played it then made our own one. Hiding photos underneath boxes using custom animations, to reveal an image...it is amazing what you can do with powerpoint....much more than originally intended.

Then we made some Father's day coupon booklets which you can personalise (thanks Hector for finding these for us) You still have time to do this at home, remember its Father's Day THIS Sunday.

If you go to the First Light website, you can enter a competition to get a professional film made about your school. All you have to do is write (up to 400 words) about What makes your school great. This would be a great opportunity to get a film crew into our school and make a film. Please speak to your teacher if you are thinking of entering, or speak to Mrs Cooper.

This week we were inspired by a music video called 'End Love' which we watched in ICT club. We then made our own animated film..it was such fun, everyone got to suggest different ideas for movements. And we refected which looked best. Their use of colour impressed us, so we broke into two groups, one keeping their blue sweatshirts on, the other with their yellow school polo shirts. We really enjoyed making the film and hope to put sound to it an share with you next week!

In the meantime have a look over at their video that inspired us they have made loads of amazing videos, including the famous treadmill masterpiece!

This is amazing...shot on a Nokia imobile phone and using Stop motion Pro, the worlds smallest stop frame animation character . .. Dot (shes only 9mm high) was shot on CellScope (basically a microscope attached to a mobile phone, it was invented by Professer Daniel Fletcher and has helped diagnose fatal diseases in remote areas of third world countries).

We started our new club today and Elliot asked if we do a talking chins film... after surfing the internet and finding some funny photos of peoples chins, we had a little discussion as to what film we could make. Our school council had just been to a meeting today at our infant feeder school and they had talked about things the year 2 children were excited or worried about. concerning their move to us in September. So we decided to make some light-hearted short film clips to help the year 2 feel at ease about moving up to our school. Here is Tom and Elliot talking about some of the concerns!

Raising Money for Comic Relief

Wow we have been overwhelmed by the sales of our film! We have raised over £300 so far...big thanks to all those who helped make the film and those who helped burn the disks and deliver them for Mrs Cooper!

Do Something Funny for Money - Comic Relief

We decided this week, that we would sell copies of our great film 'Teacher Comforts' in aid of Comic Relief. There will be unseen footage, a director's cut, if you like. So for £2 you can order a copy of the film, we will be sending out slips to everyone and putting up posters to let everyone know.

Comic Relief is on Friday 18th March, so from the friday before, we will be taking orders. Its a fabulous film, here is the cover of the cd we have made.

Visit to Whitwell, St Paul's Walden school

Mrs Cooper took three of us from ICT club to another Junior School in Hertfordshire. We were hoping to help them with animation, sadly their software didnt work on the night, but we still had lots of fun! We made a joint Pivot animated gif and showed the other school how to change the background, as they had never done that. We had a great time. Our journey home was eventful....Mrs Cooper took a wrong turn we ended up in a farm, then went round and round in circles to get back to Hitchin. Also we narrowly escaped two accidents, as a Pheasant ran out in front of the car! That's village life for you!

Big thanks to everyone in St Paul's walden ICT club and Mrs Fenn their Headteacher, for such a warm welcome.

Inspired by Aardman, we have worked so hard this term and made lots of great 'Teacher Comforts' films for you, here is a little taster...so which Teacher do you think he penguin is? Click image to watch film.

Stop Frame Frenzy

For many weeks we have been planning and preparing, then came the stop frame frenzy, which we all enjoyed, we really are madly trying to finish our films before we break up. Mrs Cooper has aimed super high this time. Our films are a complicated mix of stop frame animation, real live video footage, crazytalk pieces and still images. The soundtracks have been recorded and edited where necessary in Audacity. We have used royalty free music stings too to add pazzaz! The whole thing has been edited in Windows movie maker and we have learnt so much. We have had to have a structured filing system on our server, as the groups of pupils are often in different classes, and we needed to keep track of where all our data was saved. Mrs Cooper has even let us work a few lunchtimes, which we really enjoyed. We only have an hour for ICT club and at teh end of the session, we never are ready to go home!
Many of our "Teacher Comforts" films are completed, here is a screen grab, showing that we used a Snake for Mr Hudson (no offence!) When we can upload our whole film to show you, we hope you will let us know what you think. Please come back soon when Mrs Cooper will upload the films. We guarantee you will enjoy them.

Whilst you were at school on Friday, I was at a great animation conference down in Bristol. I am bringing back lots of ideas and concepts for everyone at Whitehill and for our ICT club. There were many great speakers who use animation in inspiraional ways, especially Nick Kallinces who had come from Australia and Hanne Pedersen from Denmark, I really enjoyed hearing from both of them. I will tell you all about it. AND, as requested by Hector... I have a special something to bring back to school!

Top Trumps Finished

We are so happy that we made our top trumps cards. They are great fun, before half term, we had a school trip to Cuffly and Mrs Cooper brought the cards, we played them on the coach. It was great fun. If anyone who isnt in ICT club would like to have a game, at break or lunchtime, please ask Mrs Cooper.

Top Trumps cards - Second Draft

This week we worked on our cards again, and decided that using Word Art for the pet name, made a big improvement, this card also has the background changed to yellow, how do you think it looks?

We have a few more cards to make then we can print out a set and get playing! We were a little sad in ICT club, because Bob the guinea pig who had a stroke at the end of last term, became much more ill and we are sorry to say she passed away.

Having compiled our list of pets and recorded the scores for each of the categories, we then had to decide who would make which card. The fairest way Mrs Cooper thought, was to use a great bit of freeware called The Hat, it shuffles through the list, on screen and then randomly picks a name from those entered.

We have been looking at other packs of this game as we decide how we want our "Whitehill Pets past and present - TOP TRUMPS" to look. We love animals at our school and really thought it would be a great idea to see them all together, those we have loved and that are no longer with us. We have lots at the moment and they are always popular, for all those children just started in year 3, we thought they would like to see JUST how many pets there have been here!

Planning with Primary Pad!

Today was our first club session, we started with everyone sharing which ICT activity they either really enjoyed or as yet hadnt had a chance to do at Whitehill Junior School. Then Mrs Cooper said we are going to make our own set of Top Trumps cards. As we are first doing this as a whole club activity, we needed to decide what our card set would be, and the categories. We found a fun way to do this by logging onto a web page that Mrs Cooper had set up using Primarypad

Primary pad is a great free tool, that allows a group of people to contribute LIVE to one document. So instead of writing all our ideas down on paper and then someone typing it into word, we can all input into our shared idea. What's more Mrs Cooper can see who contributed what, as you sign into the webpage, so we are sure that everyone has played a part in the planning of our first new project. We can export the pad to a word document to each follow up on our next stage.

"Flight 101, flight 102" - a special effects animation

Roshan, Rohan and Jamie made this disturbing film....its a clever use of our available software, as they used Stop motion Pro to make their cut out animation, (better quality and editing functionality) then imported it into Digital Blue software (they loved all the bombs and special effects you could add). So they have resulted in the best film they could make, using what we have in school in a creative way.

We are very excited to announce we are now able to Podcast and have joined Radiowaves tune in to Whitehill FM and save it in your favourites!

New ICT club members

At the start of the Summer Term, we have had a change of members to our club. There were so many more peole who wanted to join, so those of us who got in are happy to be in ICT club and keen to get going.

Our first week we made a joint animated film, learning all the techniques together, we simply made some scissors dance.

Then we edited our film and added music an titles.

We got into groups and are now planning our own films and preparing the set and items to animate.

We had another school's ICT club come and visit us this week. It was great fun, Mrs Fenn from St Paul's Walden School in Whitwell brought her ICT club to join Mrs Cooper and our ICT club. We had an extra long club session so we could get lots done.

We showed them our esafety film and some of our pivot gifs, also we showed them how we make our Stop Frame animation films. We hope you had fun and come and please visit again sometime.

A History Lesson??? Why!

This week in ICT club we looked at an old typewriter...we learnt why the keyboard that we all use on our computers is laid out the way it is.

We now know that the SHIFT key is called that - because on typewriters it physically shifted the carriage up, to type the uppercase letters.

We all had a go on this typewriter we found it quite hard, but fun to use.

We looked at the different keyboards from around the world (today was "International Day" in our school) Some have special characters for the different languages of the world.

We put cress seeds into egg shells and set up a camera in front of it (thanks Roshan, Tom & Elliot)

We watered them and took it in turns to take a photo over 7 days to capture the cress growing. Then we made it into a film, which is now completed (thanks to Daisy and Tegan for editing) You can see our film on the Films for Learning website

Herts Short Film Winners - Walk To School

Last Term's ICT club made a fantastic 3 minute film which was entered into the Herts Short Film Challenge for 2008. On Monday 2nd March 2009 the club went by minibus to Campus West in Welwyn Garden City to see our film be screened, along with the other finalists...we were so excited when the winners were announced!!! WE WON.

We used many different types of filmmaking, from computer puppeteering, stop frame animation and video film, to make this film to encourage others to walk to school...we are delighted to be the winners.

We won lots of digital cameras and some Science Software too.

Our fim is viewable in schools only, on the Herts Grid for learning website
